History Of Richmond
Originally Richmond' was part of Shene. It is shown on maps as Sceon, which was the Saxon spelling. In 1501 Henry VIII built a palace in the area naming it Richmond Palace and as the town developed it took the name. It is believed that Shakespeare performed at the palace. Queen Elizabth loved Richmond and spent a lot of time at the palace once she became queen. She died in Richond in 1603.
In 1649 the palace was no longer used as a residence until James I had reconstruction done on parts of the palace in 1688. Unfortunately most of the residence was in distress by 1779, though there were some of the structures that remained including the Gate House, which was built in 1501, the Trumpeters House, built 1700. The Gate House had five bedrooms and was given on a sixty five year lease in 1986. The Royal Library was established by Henry VII.
Richmond was agricultural land and it remained this way up until the eighteenth century. During this time White Lodge, in the heart of Richmond Park was construccted as a hunting lodge along with a few other large homes each with their own grounds. The hunting lodge was built for George II.
It was in 1777 that Richmond Bridge was completed. It was to replace the ferry crossing. Luxurious houses were built during the nineteenth century as the area became in demand due to its close location to the centre of London. Shops started to be built, which formed the town centre.
Richmond Park was created by Charles 1 in the seventeenth century. Originally it was a deer park. It was the largest Royal Park with a focus on wildlife conservation. Today the park is a ntional nature reserve. The park offers a host of historical buildings from White Lodge, which was a royal residence to the Royal Ballet School. White Lodge is now a Grade I listed building. Pembroke Lodge which was home to the British Prime Minister in the nineteenth century is a Grade II listed building. The park played a very important role in the First and Second World Wars and in the 1948 and 2012 Olympics. Today it is open to the pubic offers a host of sporting and recreational sctivities, including a golf course.
The monestery for Carnelites was founded by King Edward II and his son at sheen. He died before the work was completed in 1377. King Richard II made the area is main residence in 1383, but the death of his wife resulted in him having most of the palace destroyed. It was built again in 1414, but was destroyed in a fire in 1497.
Richmond was relatively slow as an urban development area at the start. After the Industrial Revolution, the area held on to its open spaces and it's older buildings, which helped the area retain it's character and charm. Richmond Theatre was opened in 1899, this was just one of the buildings that they managed to preserve at the time.
Since the 1840's, the site where Richmond The American International Univeristy sits, has been an educational site.
