History Of Wandsworth

Wandsworth has a very interesting and rich history which can be dated back to the Roman times. In fact it has been identified by it's position, set on the Wandle and the Thames Rivers, along with being set on one of the main east-west roads,, which is believed to have been Roman origin.

The Wandle was responsible for providing the mills will power and there were no shortage of mills by the year 1086. Originally flour mills, but soon they expanded and from the seventeenth century they were working iron, copper, gunpowder, leather and oil pressing, to name a few. The Wandle offered clean water, ideal for dying and bleaching.

The manor was originally held by William, who was the son of Ansculfy, according to the Domesday Book of 1086. It comprised of twenty two acres of meadow. Over the years it has provided accommodation to various immigrants including Dutch metal workers who fled in the 1590's to avoid persecution. Today it is also home to those from the European Union.

The Ram Brewery was built in 1576 and later closed in 2006. In 1802 the Surrey Iron Railways was opened, this ran from Wandsworth to Croydon. It was operated by the very first rail company in the world, but was closed in 1846. This resulted in the railways station being built on the Richmond Railways, which was opened the same year as the Wandsworth Prison, which was 1851.

The gas plant at Wandsworth was opened in 1834 close to Wandsworth Bridge. This was built by the Wandsworth and Putney Gaslight and Coke Company, it was incorporated in 1856 by the Act of Parliament. The company grew extensively and by 1936 it was responsible for providing a large section of south west London. The company became the South Eastern Gas Board in 1949 when it was nationalised.

It was in the 1860's and 1870's that Wandsworth experienced a suburban development boom.

The area remained part of Surrey until 1889. In 1855 Wandsworth District was formed which included Battersea, Clapham, Streatham, Tooting and Putney. Battersea was removed in 1888. The remaining districts became part of the Borough of Wandsworth in 1900. In 1965 the London Borough of Wandsworth came into play, it excluded Clapham and Streatham, they became part of the Borough of Lambeth.

In the twentieth century King George's Park was added along with a number of Council states, the Wandsworth Shopping Centre and the very first riverside flats.

Based on statistics received from the 2011 census, there are currently three hundred and six thousand nine hundred and ninety five people living in Wandsworth of which the average age is thirty four. Sixty one percent of inhabitants were born in England.

As you can see boiler doctor 247 has become a integral part of the community and is proud to be Wandsworth's leading plumbing and heating company with boilers as our business and plumbing is our passion call us today and let us restore your home or business.
