History Of Hyde Park
Hyde Park was a few buildings in the eighteenth century, in 1795 the Bishop of London was granted the ability to lease some of the buildings. He commissioned an estate surveyor, Samual Pepys-Cockerell to come up with a plan for the estate.
Connaught Square was built in 1821 along with mash of the homes in the area, which were completed in 1828. These were designed by Thomas Allason. Many of the homes have undergone renovation over the years. The properties around Connaught Square are now very high in demand.
Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens split in 1728 when Queen Caroline took three hundred acres from Hyde Park to create Kensington Gardens, leaving five hundred and fifty acres which has become one of the most famous parks in the country.
The Second World War resulted in the area experiencing bomb damage and the Church Commissions decided to rebuild sections of the estate, along with a building firm, called Wates. This resulted in blocks of flats being built, along with a number of Victorian villas. In 2014 the residents took ownership of 1 Hyde Park Street and had it listed as a Grade II building.
Hyde Park, the open space, was originally created in 1536 as a hunting ground for Henry VIII. He acquired the area from Westminster Abbey and enclosed it as a deer park and private hunting ground. It was Charles I who opened the park to the public in 1637.
In 1689 William III moved to Kensington Palace and drove the Kings private road which ran through the one side of Hyde Park. The road can still be seen today. The road was used by the wealthy in the 1800's where they could ride their horses.
Landscaping was undertaken an completed in 1733 for Queen Caroline. The Serpentine was formed. The Crystal Palace was built to the south of the park and the Great Exhibition was introduced in 1851. The Crystal Palace was moved to Sydenham.
On 20 July 1982 two bombs went off known as the Hyde Park and Regent's Park bombings which resulted in eight deaths along with the death of seven horses.
Based on the statistics provided by the 2011 census there are more than three thousand four hundred people living in Hyde Park Estate. Two thousand three hundred and twelve speak English and one thousand nine hundred and thirty three are English born.
