History Of Mortlake
The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded Mortlake as “mort” and “lac” meaning “a young salmon in a small stream,” it is believed to be Old English.
The manor of Mortlake was large, but it was a small village with a few houses along the riverside in a single street. It remained this way until 1619. This is when James I gave financial assistance to establish a tapestry works. Flemish weavers were employed. Charles I bought the enterprise in 1636. He later purchased seven hundred and thirty to acres of the parish for his own hunting ground, which was located at Richmond Park.
A sugar refinery was built in the seventeenth century and the tapestry works was closed in 1703. Mortlake Pottery was founded by John Saunders in 1743 and it became the largest manufacturer of stoneware in London. Kishereware was founded on the opposite site of the street by a former employee of Mortlake Pottery, Joseph Kishere, he made more decorative pots.
James Weatherstone introduced a successful brewery to the area in 1807 as the area started to become a top residential area with lavish homes being built along the river. This brewery was responsible for supplying the British army in India, they would send a pale ale to the troops giving them a taste of home. The area is also known for Richard Wesley Gale's prize honey, when he started bottling the honey in Mortlake in 1919.
In 1845 the famous Oxford and Cambridge boat race finished in Mortlake. It has hosted numerous rowing events over the years, which start and finish in the area.
In 1869 the National School in Mortlake was built at primary level to provide compulsory education. The infants school followed in 1890 and the secondary school in 1906.
The Limes, a home belonging to William Moffat became the town hall from 1895, but was damaged by a bomb blast during the Second World War in 1940. Since being restored it has become an office block. A number of the former commercial buildings and some amenities have since been demolished and replaced with apartment blocks to meet the growing demand for housing in the area.
The Mortlake rail station was responsible for commuting passengers to the centre of London, where many residents worked. They chose Mortlake because they could escape the noise and smells of London. Today the rail station is a classic car showroom.
