History Of Tooting
Tooting has been around since before the Saxons. Tooting is an Anglo-Saxon name, but the name could mean numerous things. It was the Romans that built the road which ran from London to Chichester, passing through Tooting. The road was later called Stane Street, now it is the Tooting High Street.
The Abbey of Chertsey had the area along with Streatham during the Saxon times. This area is in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Totinges. The De Gravenel family had the land from the Norman period and it was called Tooting Graveney.
Tooting only really started to experience development in the late Victorian times. Some builds did take place during the Edwardian times, but most of the growth happened in the 1920's and the 1930's.
The Tooting Library was opened in 1902 with a second storey being added in 1906. The library went through a complete rebuilt in 2012. The London County Council built St Benedict's Hospital which opened to the public in 1930. The Granada Cinema opened shortly after that in 1931 and in 1954 saw the opening of St George's Hospital, which underwent redevelopment in 2003.
Tooting Broadway was part of Graveney manor. It was a profitable organisation that sprawled over seven acres of land.
The Peter Drouer Pauper Children's Asylum faced Broadway. Sadly it didn't have the best sanitary conditions which resulted in a cholera outbreak in 1849 which resulted in one hundred and eighteen children passing away as a result. Drouer was put on trial but was found not guilty. He quickly sold the property which resulted in improvements to the areas drainage systems.
The nineteenth century saw a number of private homes, butt mostly the area was brimming with shops. In 1903 trams started to serve the area, but they would derail due to a sharp turn on Tooting Corner. In 1926 Tooting Broadway Station was opened which resulted in a housing and business boom for the area.
The Granada Cinema which was opened in 1931 had a cathedral like design inside. It is a Grade I listed building and home to a Bingo Hall.
There are two indoor markets in Tooting boasting a number of permanent stalls. Both have entrances off Tooting High Street and they are set only metres away from each other. The Broadway Market, has been around since 1938 and is one of London's largest indoor markets.
Tooting has become a top residential area appealing to younger professionals who work in the centre of London. This enables them to escape the hustle and bustle to a quieter suburban area. Based on the 2011 census there are sixteen thousand two hundred and thirty nine people living in Tooting with the average age of thirty three. Fifty two percent of the residents were born in England and seventy two percent speak English.
