History Of West London
West London was mostly farmland and wooded area at the beginning of time, it wasn't until the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that this rural space started to become something of interest to those who lived and worked in central London and were looking for a country residence to escape to.
West London is home to some of the better known areas of London from the famous Hyde Park to the shopping experiences in Mayfair. It is also home to Paddington, better known for the character “Paddington bear.”
Back in the day, in the eighteenth century, London was divided into sections which were owned by Bishops and parishes, an example would be Hyde Park which was owned by the Bishop of London. The area became high in demand as more people wanted to move to the outskirts of central London with an easy commute to work each day. Many parts of West London were middle upper class areas with grand villas and mansions, along with some terraced homes.
West London was better known for Queen Caroline who had Kensington gardens created in 1728. She took three hundred acres from the popular Hyde Park to create her gardens, which are open to the public today.
It was during the Second World War that West London really experienced devastation, as with many other areas of London. West London was subjected to flying bombs which destroyed buildings and homes. The rebuild took years and councils got involved building council estates for those who had lost everything as a result.
Henry VIII who was a keen hunter took many parts of West London as his hunting grounds. He closed the areas to the public and used them for his own person gain, this included Hyde Park in 1536. Later when Charles I took over, he opened many of these spaces up to the public for them to enjoy.
The Crystal Palace was originally based in West London before it was moved to the West. Crystal Palace attracted thousands of visitors and the Great Exhibition show as a huge hit, which was introduced in 1851.
The area has also been subjected to more recent attacks with a bomb blast that was set in 1982, it resulted in the loss of lives and a number of homes being destroyed.
West London has grown in popularity with thousand of people living in the area. Most of them are English speaking and a small percentage of English born. The average age is early thirties, making it young families and professionals who are moving to the area.
Over the years many of the original homes were demolished and replaced with smaller terraced houses and apartment buildings to meet the growing demand as the population in London continued to grow. Council estates have been established along with numerous shops, boutique stores and shopping centres.
