History Of East London
East London has a very interesting and rich history dating back to medieval times. The area of East London only really started when the City of London started bursting at the seams and started to grow beyond its boundaries. They relied on old Roman roads to access the area, but growth in the area was slow at first.
Slowly modest extensions were built and by the eighteenth century, East London started to experience an urban housing boom, mainly with those from the military that worked at the Tower of London. At this time the area of East London belonged to St Luke's Parish. The Moorfields remained relatively untouched until 1812.
The City of London didn't really grow until the 1700's and then popular parishes started to be built in the East. In 1650 Shadwell took shape as a maritime settlement and in 1855 saw the introduction of the Royal Victoria Dock in Newham.
Industries slowly started to spread along the River Thames and Victorian and Edwardian railway was introduced in the nineteenth century, making the area more accessible to those working in the city and wanting to escape to the outskirts. Suburban homes were developed and after World War II, the area saw a number of social housing developments being introduced. By 1902 the area was fondly named the “East End.”
The East End as we know it today is home to a number of London boroughs including Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Watham Forest and more.
There are numerous historical sites to be explored here and those living in the area today enjoy easy access to the city centre and throughout the country with the rail and underground system providing them with reliable transport solutions. The rail was introduced here in the mid 1800's which created an interest in the area and seeing the marshes of Moorfields being developed by numerous builders creating a wide choice of homes from lavish villas and mansions to more modest terraced housing, which was exceptionally popular at the time.
East London is brimming with historical sites that can take you back to the history of this great area from Sutton House in Hackney which dates back to 1535. Built in Tudor style this three storey home was the home of a silk merchant. Then there is Whitechapel Art Gallery which held it's first exhibition in 1901.
Ragged School Museum dates back to 1877 where it provided education to more than one thousand ragged children for more than thirty years or the Wilton's Musical Hall which is from 1730 and is the oldest grand music hall that is still surviving today.
London has seen tremendous population growth over the eyers and East London is the one area with the highest population density, not to mention the highest rise in population numbers between 2001 and 2011. Tower Hamlet has the highest population growth in the entire United Kingdom growing by over twenty six percent in the ten year period with an estimated population of two hundred and fifty four thousand, one hundred residents.
Newham was next on the list with a twenty three percent increase in the ten year period.
