History Of Anerley
Anerley has a rich history dating back to 1827 when the first first house was built. This area was an unoccupied part of Penge Common and falls into the London Borough of Bromley. In 1827, a Scottish silk manufacturer build the first house in the area and named it Anerley, which is where the name originally came from.
William Sanderson, the Scottish silk manufacturer, chose the name Anerley because it means “only” or “solitary.” The road the house was on, what later became, Anerley Road and is still the name today.
This area has been through a lot before it became a popular South East London area. The Croydon Canal, which was built in 1809 passed through the area, though it only lasted twenty seven years, it drew great attention to this local area. The canal was later turned into a railway line with a section which was deviated away to what is now the Anerley Rail station, which was built in June 1839.
One of the highlights of Anerley is the Anerley Gardens which was developed in 1841, this turned the area into a thriving social venue with the help of the railway line.
In 1849, the North Surrey District School was built on Anerley Road made from red brick. This school comprises of an infants department, central block and a number of wings. It also has a chapel, outhouse and infirmary and play grounds. The school is surrounded by fifty eight acres, all enclosed by the school wall. The school can accommodate nine hundred children training the girls in domestic services and the boys in mechanical trades.
It wasn't until 1878 that the Town Hall was built and renovated to make it larger in 1911. The Town Hall was home to the court chambers, offices, public hall, committee rooms and in 1925 petty sessional courts were established. Today this hall is home to the Crystal Palace Community Development Trust. This trust hosts business facilities, a youth club and art club. The library was also housed here, but was closed in 2014.
Unfortunately this area experienced extensive damaged during WWII with five rockets landing in the area, one of which landed in Anerley Gardens. Betts Park was opened to the public in 1928. This was land donated to the council by Frederick Betts, it was to be in memory of his mother. It was in 1934 that there were improvements made by the council.
In 1978 there was a bad gas explosion which damaged the Anerley Arms. This left it unoccupied and boarded up for a year, when Samuel Smith purchased the building and turned it into a Yorkshire Brewery and used traditional materials to completely restore the interior, resembling a Victorian appearance.
A merger in 2009 saw St Paul's and Christ Church merge as the Anglican Parish of Anerley on Anerley Road.
Today Anerley is a culturally diverse area with a host of residents from white British residents to those of Caribbean decent and African decent.
