History Of Bermondsey
Bermondsey is in the borough of Southwark and provides an interesting history, which attracts visitors to the area to soak up some of the culture and history the area has to offer. The earliest appearance of this town was in the famous Domesday Book from 1086 where the town was referred to as “Bermundsey” and “Bermundesye.”
The area was home to the Bermondsey Abbey, which was completed in 1082. This lead to the monks of the abbey working hard to develop the area. They cultivated the land surrounding the abbey. Interestingly, what you may not know about this London town is that the Knights Templar also owned property in the area in 1353 and they named some of the most notable streets, names that the streets still hold today.
Kind Edward III build his manor house in Bermondsey, while the building doesn't stand today, you can still see the evacuated foundations. These are located just near the famous Angel public house.
The real changes to the area started in the seventeenth century after the Great Fire of London, where the area became a lovely garden suburb. The Pleasure Gardens were finished in the seventeenth century along with the Cherry Gardens, which were completed in 1664. This caused the area to be one of the top residential neighbourhoods and was in demand at the time.
The St Mary Magdalen was built on Bermuda Street in 1690 and was developed in the nineteenth century. You can still visit this beautiful architectural masterpiece today.
It wasn't until the eighteenth century that the Bermondsey Spa was built. This was a result of a spring which was found which came from the River Neckinger. Unfortunately after this period, the area didn't have the best name and slums were built along the river during the nineteenth century, including industrial plants, warehouses, docks and immigration housing. Jacobs Island has an exceptionally bad reputation during this stage. Of course this isn't the case today and the area has become a thriving suburb of London, home to hundreds of people and businesses.
The Town Hall was built in 1881 and the area started redevelopment in the late nineteenth century and into the twentieth century as the river trade in the area expanded. This included the arrival of the rail station, Spa Road Station, which was the first railway built in London.
The majority of manufacturers focused on leather and hides where the warehouse buildings were in Bermuda Street. Today these are residential homes and offices. The Butlers Wharf warehouses and wharves were damaged extensively during World War II and remained redundant right through to the 1960's, due to the trade collapse. The main wharves were developed in the 1980's. They were then developed into residential and commercial properties which were are considered upmarket and expensive, this started in 1997.
Today Bermondsey is home to superior residential properties, a host of restaurants, top boutiques and a host of bars, making it a popular suburb for families and professionals who want to live and work in London.
