History Of Blackheath
Blackheath has an exceptionally interesting history from urban myths to battles. This residential area has seen so much over the years. The main urban myth that shadows the area is the myth associated with the 1665 plague, also referred to as the black death of the fourteenth century.
It is know the area was the disposal area for the bodies from the black death, it was also a burial point during the medieval times. A bit of the darker side of the area that many people aren't aware of.
In addition to this, it is also well-known for being the rally point for the Wat Tyler Peasants Revolt in 1381 and the Jack Cades Kenush Rebellion in 1450. To remember these two events, there are still roads today which look back on the history; Wat Tyler Road and Cade Road.
Another part of the history of Blackheath includes the Battle of the Dept Jurd Bridge on the 17 June 1492, which is when the Cornish rebels were defeated. This is only the tip of the ice berg in what the area has been exposed to during it's time. It is a well-established town which has been involved in a host of historical events from battles and plagues to sporting events and teams.
The area is renowned for the highway men that came to the area during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This is due to the fact that Blackheath was en-route to Kent and the Chandling ports, making it the perfect target location for these robbers.
Further the development of Blackheatlh Park was also started in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this is now home to a number of Gerogian and Victorina homes, their architecture can still be seen when walking around the area today.
St Michael and All Angels Church was completed in 1830, the architect was George Smith. This church was famous in the area and is fondly referred to as “the needle of Kent.” It was in 1760 where the excitement really came abbout with The Pagoda property, which is designed to look exactly like a Chinese Pagoda and really does make a statement to those visiting the area.
When it comes to sports, Blackheath has been at the forefront throughout history starting in 1608 when they were the site where golf was first introduced in England. Today there is the famous Blackheath Golf Club where the game is still enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
They also introduced the very first hockey club in England back in the nineteenth century. They were also the home of the Greenwich Cricket Club in the eighteenth century. This isn't the only sporting that Blackheath has been known for throughout the age.
Blackheath is famous for the Blackheath Rugby Club which was completed in 1858, it is the oldest rugby club in the whole of England. They were the organisers for the first rugby international match between England and Scotland, which was held in Scotland and they hosted the very first match between England and Wales.
The final piece of sporting history relating to Blackheath is that since 1981 they have been the starting point of the famous London Marathon, which starts at Greenwich Park.
