History Of Camberwell
Camberwell was first noted in the famous book from 1086, The Domesday Book. The name of Camberwell hasn’t been confirmed, though it could potentially be due to Celtic inhabitants or a place where people were sent when suffering from disease, such as leprosy, for treatment in the healing wells. This hasn't been confirmed and at this time is all speculation.
There is one sure thing abbot Camberwell and that is it had Medieval significance, which can be seen when driving through the streets and just looking at some of the architecture. It is recorded that King John hunted in the area on a regular basis and it was one of his favourite hunting grounds, and this was later followed by both Charles I and Charles II. In 1615 the vicar at St Giles established the Wilsons Schools.
New roads and bridges saw commuters arriving in Camberwell as early as the 1780s. And the introduction of the horse drawn tram in the 1870's made the area even more accessible for visitors, many of which wanted to take advantage of the healing properties of the mineral springs.
In 1820 the larger high class terraced houses were built, though by the nineteenth century the area was covered in smaller terraced homes. Later the Georgian properties were all subdivided to create multiple homes for the working class. The annual fair which took place in this suburb was abandoned in 1855.
The Free Library and Art Gallery moved to Camberwell in 1887 from Battersea. New buildings were funded by John Passmore Edwards to become the South London Gallery and Camberwell School of Art. Today it is known as the Camberwell College of Arts.
In 1910 the first flat was purchased and in the eighteenth century the grand mansions, one of which was Dr Leitmans Estate, created Camberwell Grove, which was also opened as a public road for added convenience. Today there are numerous apartment buildings in Camberwell.
The majority of visitors to Camberwell in the early years were looking for rural tranquillity and wanting to take advantage of the mineral springs. Most visitors came fro London. Of course this area was completely transformed, along with the rest of London, when the railway arrived.
From 1801 there were seven thousand and fifty nine residents in Camberwell and by 1851 this had increased substantially to fifty four thousand, six hundred and sixty seven residents.
Camberwell St Giles Parish owned more than four thousand five hundred acres of land in 1831. In 1900 the parish became the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell and in 1965 it was abolished.
The area is still brimming with well-preserved Gerogian and twentieth century homes. It was in 2009 when Camberwell suffered a devastating blow when a fire ravaged through a twelve story apartment building called Lakanal House. Six people were killed and more than twenty were seriously injured.
Camberwell is famous for the Camberwell Beauty, a butterfly rarely found, which was identified in the area in 1748.
