History Of Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace is a residential area and home of the former landmark, The Crystal Palace, which stood in the area from 1854 to 1936. The palace was one of the most popular landmarks in the area, attracting visitors from throughout the London area. This area is located on one of the highest points in London, three hundred and sixty seven feet, which offers residents the most spectacular views of the capital city.
Originally the area was home to a natural oak forest, where development started in the nineteenth century to create The Crystal Palace, which sadly burned down in 1936. It then later became The Crystal Palace Park, which is now a national sports centre.
Interestingly the pneumatic railway was trialed in Crystal Palace area in 1864. The area was home to two rail stations, one high and one low, but with the burning down of The Crystal Palace, the number of commuters declined significantly, which saw the closure of the high rail station in 1954.
Vicars Oak is a famous oak tree which marked the parish boundaries, due to this Crystal Palace actually sits in five London Boroughs. The Borough of Bromley, the Borough of Croyden, the Borough of Southwark, the Borough of Lambeth and the Borough of Lewisham. To confuse issues due to the parish boundaries so many centuries ago, the area also has three postcodes.
Crystal Palace was the ancient boundary between Surrey and Kent, which ran through the area from 1889 to 1965.
The natural oak forest, which is what originally made up this thriving suburb was the Great North Wood and occupied most of the area for decades. It was used by Londoners as an escape to nature and to enjoy some tranquillity during the nineteenth century. Visitors would make their way to Crystal Palace to enjoy the natural outdoor spaces and to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.
The Crystal Palace was a cast iron and glass structure which was built in Hyde Park in 1851 and where this areas name originates. It was home to the School of Art, Science and Literature and the School of Engineering. The palace welcomed visitors from throughout London for more than seven decades until it burned to the ground on 30 November 1936. Visitors relied on the railway to transport them from London where they could enjoy a host of exhibitions over the seven decades that the building stood.
Crystal Palace Park is a Victorian leisure park and is situated on Norwood Ridge, one of the highest points, so visitors can really get to enjoy those spectacular city views while relaxing and soaking up the sun and fresh air.
Today Crystal Palace is home of beautiful terraced homes, shops, restaurants and pubs. It is ideally located to London city centre and is popular with families and professional couples who work in the city and want to live on the outskirts. People living in the area get to enjoy wonderful London views, open spaces and generous sized homes.
