History Of Denmark Hill
Denmark Hill is in the Camberwell area, part of the Borough of Southwark. The area was named after Queen Anne's husband, Prince George of Denmark, who hunted in the area. As you may have guessed it is built on a hill, lined with residential homes.
It was the de Crespigny family, who were French Huguenots, who began to develop a suburban area in the 1780's. Their residence, Champion Lodge, was demolished in 1841 to make space for new housing. The maps from 1786 shows only the Fox Under the Hill as the only building in Denmark Hill, but the present day Fox Under the Hill is now found where the St Matthews Vicarage used to be.
John Ruskin, a writer, lived in a detached house in Denmark Hill for three decades. There are references to the area in some of his books.
St Matthews Church was built in 1846 and villas were the top choice for residential properties over the traditional terraced homes, this was even after the railway was built in 1865, which enables more commuters to move to this residential area.
It was in 1905 that the Denmark Hill School was opened, which is today the Lyndhurst Primary School. Ruskin Park, named after the writer John Ruskin, was completed in 1907 and opened to the public. The public park welcomed those living in London who wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
There were numerous hospitals in Denmark Hill and there is speculation that the burial ground was a “plague pit.” In 1913 saw the relocation of Kings College Hospital, which moved to where St Clement Danes was and a medical school was established. The Maudsley Hospital, which was a military hospital, was built in 1915 and then in 1923 saw the arrival of the London County Council Hospital, which was a mental illness hospital for acute cases. Both the Maudsley Hospital and the London County Council Hospital are now part of Kings Health.
In 1932 William Booth College was constructed, it was designed by leading architect Giles Gilbert Scott, who designed numerous buildings throughout London during that time.
Denmark Hill was home to artists, actors, inventors and architects. It is a residential suburb close to London and attracted those who worked in London but didn't want to live in the city centre.
The station was built in 1865 and is an Italianate design. It is an impressive building and considered an architectural masterpiece. It was renovated in 1980 after a fire, the renovation included a public house called Phoenix. The station was- redesigned again in 2011 to 2013, adding more platforms to enable commuters to use the public transport network to get around London with ease.
Today Denmark Hill Station operates London Underground and trains with Thameslink to Clapham Junction, Dalston Junction, Surrey Quays, London Victoria, Sevenoaks, Dartford and more.
