History Of Fulham
Fulham is ideally located on the banks of the River Thames. In 879 the Danish army, which had been removed from Chippenham and Cirencester came to Fulham.
The parliamentary army, stationed near London back in 1647 would sometimes hold their councils in Fulham.
In 691 the manor of Fulham was given to Bishop Erkenwald. It remained in the Bishops of London possession until it was sold in 1647 to Colonel Edmund Harvey.
The name Fulham was originally Fulanhamme, which is believed to be “of mud.” This is beloved that it was due to the fact that now and then the river would flood. A number of digs have brought an interesting history to Fulham of around five thousand years. It is believed that the Neolithic people lived on the rives edge, some areas were also Roman settlements in the third and fourth centuries.
The church is first recorded in 1154. The first parish priest was appointed in 1242. Sadly the Medieval section of the church was demolished in 1881, when it was redeveloped to make it bigger for the growing Fulham community.
It was in 1729 that the Fulham Bridge was built, later this was replaced by the Putney Bridge in 1888. Fulham was the playground of the wealthy in the eighteenth century. It was renowned for prostitution and gambling. Hammersmith was part of Fulham until 1834, but due to the rate of growth in the area it was decided to create two parishes. They remained apart until 1965.
Walham Green Village was created in the nineteenth century and became part of the Fulham parish, this resulted in transport development. With the transportation came a urban development boom in the area which also encouraged trade. The first public utility company in the world, Imperial Gas Light and Coke Company opened in 1824.
The canal, known as Kensington Canal opened in 1828 after numerous delays and financial problems. The railway was already becoming a top choice, which meant the canal didn't last long. Transport links were soon extended to East Fulham and Lillie Bridge, a top sporting venue in the nineteenth century.
Messrs Gibbs and Flew redeveloped North End in the 1880s building an impressive one thousand two hundred homes. They had major issues getting the properties occupied and the area was renamed to West Kensington. The last functioning farm in Fulham was Crabtree Farm, but this was also closed in early twentieth century.
It is believed that weaving and ceramics were a large part of the history of Fulham, dating back to the seventeenth century. This was later followed by carpet and tapestry production.
The area was a working class area . The area attracted immigrants to the service industries. Fulham experienced a wave of demolition after the Second World War and saw some social development housing being erected as a result.
Today Fulham is considered one of the most expensive areas of London. What Fulham is most famous for more than anything else is the Fulham Football Club, which was created in 1879. They won the West London Amateur Cup in 1887 and started playing at Craven Cottage in 1896. The Fulham Football Club received professional status in 1898.
