History Of Herne Hill
Herne Hill is set in the London Boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth. It was originally part of the Medieval manor of Milkwell, which can be dated back to 1291. One of the earliest buildings in the area was the Half Moon Inn. Back then the area was undeveloped and brimming with natural woodlands.
Landowners in Herne Hill restricted development, ensuring that only wealthy homes existed surrounded by farms, smallholdings and vacant land. It became the area enjoyed by the wealthy merchants and professional men who worked in London. By the end of the eighteenth century only grand houses sat in this impressive London area. One of which was Casino House, which sat on fifteen acres of ground. Where Casino House stood is not the Casino Estate, the name was kept to remind us of the areas rich and interesting history.
In the second half of the nineteenth century developers started making their way into the area and the streets Railton Road and Dulwich Road were laid by the Westminster Freehold Company in 1855, this is now known as Poets Corner. This enabled developers to start introducing smaller terraced homes, making the area more affordable to middle to upper class families who wanted to escape the centre of London to an outlying area.
In 1862 the Herne Hill Velodrone was built, it was used for recreational use. Today it is used for track cycling. By the twentieth century most of the larger houses had been replaced with terraces and the Half Moon Inn had been rebuilt.
After World War I, Casino House was bought by the Camberwell Council, though it had been demolished some time before, the houses built were created for “houses fit for heroes.” It was a housing solution for the heroes that had fought in the war and this welcomed families into the area.
The name, Herne Hill, first appears in 1789, but maps from 1745 show the area with woodlands, small holdings and farms. The name comes from a prominent Dulwich family, the Hernes.
Interestingly, while many of the outlying areas of London were badly damaged during World War II, Herne Hill managed to get off quite lightly.
The Church of St Paul was built by G. Alexander in 1845. It was later rebuilt after a fire by a Gothic architect in 1858. The lake at Surrey Gardens that you can visit today was the original fish pond at Casino House.
The Carnegie Library was opened in 1906 by a Lambeth librarian who managed to secure a grant from Carnegie, naming the library after him.
In 2013, Herne Hill were devastated with a flood, caused by a burst pipe which caused the Half Moon Inn to close their doors. It was a huge debate as this had been in the centre of the community for so many years. The flood caused major damage to many properties, causing many business and home owners to have to renovate.
Today Herne Hill is a thriving community with pubs, restaurants and a host of shopping streets. It is home to families and professionals who work in and around London.
As you can see boiler doctor 247 has become a integral part of the community and is proud to be Herne Hill's leading plumbing and heating company with boilers as our business and plumbing is our passion call us today and let us restore your home or business.
