History Of Mayfair
The majority of Mayfair was owned by Sir Thomas Grosvenor in 1677 when he married heiress Mary Davies. In 1686 they held a two week fair which became notorious for its large crowds. The fields were replaced with residential streets and squares, all high class. Bond Street filled with fashionable shops.
Some of the best streets were those designed for tradesmen by developers. In the 1890's the best streets were the terracotta fronts of Mount Street. During both the First World War and the Second World War many of the wealthier residents chose to move to the countryside to avoid the flying bombs. Many of these wealthy residents did not return after the war. Some of the houses were converted to offices, some used by spies under permission from Westminster Council.
Originally this upmarket area was fields with Shepherds Market being developed in 1686. There were already a few buildings in place by this time, including the Stanhope Now cottage, which was built in 1618, but was destroyed in the Second World War. It is believed that the area may have been used by the Romans. There is also a lot of speculation that Auus Piautius built a fort in the area which was used to conquest the Romans in 43AD.
Mayfair was part of the St Martin in the Fields Parish and is named after the two week May Fair that ran in the area from 1686 to 1764. The fair was held where Shepherd Market stands today. In 1764 the fair was moved to Bow after the local residents complained.
Sir Thomas Grosvenor owned forty hectares of the land in Mayfair, but most the development took place in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Grosvenors became the Dukes of Westminster. Mayfair became part of St George Hanover Square parish in 1724.
Today Mayfair is mostly commercial with offices in converted homes and buildings. There are numerous embassy offices, real estate companies and more in the area. The United States Consulate takes up most of Grosvenor Square. There are numerous residential properties, hotels and restaurants. In fact, Mayfair has the largest concentration of hotels in London. In 1975 there was destruction in the city when the Provisional Irish Republican Army bombed the Scottish restaurants, they killed one person, but injured fifteen.
Mayfair has been recorded as one of the most pensive areas to live in London by leading newspaper, the Financial Times. It is home to five thousand one hundred and eighteen residents and is made up of four hundred and twelve nationalities. It is ideally located and with the business hub on the doorstep, it makes commuting to and from work easy and effective for those living in the area.
