History Of New Cross
New Cross was originally named Hatcham, which was an Anglo-Saxon name. It was a heavily wooded area based on maps from 1619. New Cross was home to the main road from London to Canterbury and Dover and tolls were payable from the early eighteenth century.
In 1813 the toll-gate was moved which resulted in the whole area being renamed to New Cross. In 1614 most of the land was owned by the Haberdashers Company and they were responsible for the building in the area, which started with large country houses in the eighteenth century. These were awarded long leases to wealthy men from London. In the 1840's the company started building magnificent villas followed in 1870 with a grammar school for boys and girls.
It was when the first railway was introduced in 1839 that the area started to welcome other residents, mostly middle class families. Many of the original houses have now been converted to flat with a majority occupied by students attending the Goldsmiths College.
Hatcham Iron Works were responsible for the manufacturing of railway locomotives in the area from the 1840's through to the 1860's. The Royal Naval School was built in 1843 and later became the Goldsmiths Company Technical and Recreational Institute. Today it is Goldsmiths, University of London.
Super Kinema was opened in 1925, the building still stands today where you will find The Venue nightclub. On the 25 November 1944, the area was devastated by a V-2 rocket which exploded in the Woolworth s store. One hundred and sixty eight people were killed, it is one of the most devastating bombs from World War II experienced in the area.
According to the Domesday Book of 1086, the area was referred to as Hacheham. It was held by Bishop of Lisieux and the Bishop of Bayeux. It remained as part of Kent and Surrey until 1889.
It is believed the name New Cross came from the Golden Cross Coaching House. In the nineteenth century the area was referred to as the New Cross Tangle, due to the number of railway lines and workshops that covered the area. New Cross bus garage was the largest tram depot in London in 1906. The last tram from 1952 ran from Woolwich to New Cross.
In 1977 the area was known for the Battle of Lewisham and in 1981 it saw thirteen black people being killed in the New Cross Fire, which was believed to be a racial attack and resulted in the largest political mobilisation black people in Britain.
The Milwall Football Club was founded by Scottish workers in 1885 and would welcome crowds of forty five thousands. The club was originally based at The Den from 1910 to 1993 and then moved to The New Den.
The area was also home to the New Cross Rangers in 1934 at the New Cross Speedway and Greyhound Stadium.
Today this lovely suburb is home to professionals and families, many of which work in central London.
