History Of North London
North London is an area that is brimming with historical buildings and sites, all of which have an interesting story to tell. The area can be dated back centuries, but the only real growth started in the eighteenth century as London started to grow beyond its borders. This is a time where more people working and living in London wanted to escape the smells and noise of the city and move to quieter and more rural areas. Of course, North London is no longer a rural area and is brimming with suburban homes, council estates, offices and industrial buildings.
One of the buildings where you can soak up just some of the amazing history that North London has to offer is Alexandra House. This property was built in 1873 and closed in 1889. It is also the place where the BBC made their first ever television broadcast in 1936.
Then there is the Emirates Stadium. Home of the famous Arsenal Football Club, which was originally built in 1886. It has undergone renovation since. Bruce Castle dates back to the sixteenth century and sits on more than twenty acres of land, while Little Angel Theatre can be dated back to 1961.
The London Canal Museum was built in 1863 and originally belonged to an ice cream maker while Waterlow Park dates back to 1889, this hillside park was a recreational park, a place for those living in London to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
But it was the North London Railway that really boosted suburban development when it was introduced in 1846. The railway was originally designed to link London to Birmingham making it easier for those to travel to the capital city. The name was changed to the North London Railway in 1853. In 1860 they extended their services, which resulted in an independent line being introduced to take commuters to the city. In 1908 trams and the underground railway was introduced, which resulted in the rail becoming electrified in 1916.
Based on the 2011 census statistics there are two million six hundred people living in North London. The population has increased by more than fifty seven thousand people since 2001. The average age of resident is forty one years of age, which differs from other areas in London, where the average ages are late twenties to mid thirties.
Many of the reinterprets of North London work in the city centre, relying on the transport links to commute to work daily. Over the years the area has grown in popularity, enabling residents to escape the hustle and bustle of the city at the end of each day.
Today North London is brimming with a choice of homes from detached houses and villas to semi-detached cottages, terraced houses and council estates. This is an area that is also brimming with open spaces, large industrial buildings and office blocks.
