History Of Paddington
Paddington has a very rich history, though most people who don't live in the area know the name from the famous character “Paddington Bear.” In fact this area was originally a farmstead, first record in 998 and owned by a man named Padda, where the name hails from. The Paddington Green area only started growing in the sixteenth century due to its close proximity to the centre of London. The White Lion Pub was built in 1524 on what is now known as Bell Street.
St Mary's Church was built in the seventeenth century and rebuilt in 1791. The area soon became a popular rural retreat. In the nineteenth century development started as transportation was introduced to the area with the opening of the canal in 1801 and horse drawn buses in 1829. This made it easier for those wanting to move out of the hustle and bustle of London to live in a more rural location and commute to work on a daily basis.
The railway was introduced in 1838 and Great Western Railway used a temporary building at the time. They opened the permanent station in 1854 which was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, an engineer with the railway.
By this stage, Paddington was becoming quite populated and the White Lion pub was changed the Metropolitan Music Hall in the 1860's. There was also a hospital and the village had its own parish. The music hall was demolished in 1962 to construct the Marylebone Flyover and replaced the building with the Paddington Green Police Station, which is known for the bombing of 1992 by the IRA. Mixed developments started to appear throughout the area.
The first temporary Paddington Station was opened on the 4 June 1838 and was the first Great Western Railway service from London to Taplow. The temporary building became a goods depo when the permanent station was opened in 1854. The building housed a glazed roof with wrought iron arches and spanned twenty one metres.
In 1851 the Great Western Hotel was built just in front of the station and designed by Philip Charles Hardwich, an architect and son of the Euston Arch designer, Philip Hardwich. The station went through redevelopment to enlarge it from 1906 through to 1915. The redevelopment matched the previous design enabling it to flow seamlessly.
A number of the railway employees were killed during the first World War in 1922 and a memorial to them can be found on Platform I.
Sadly the station has experienced some set backs and disasters through the years with the first on 19 February 1840 when a mail train was derailed, luckily in this instance there were no casualties. Then a collision occurred between a passenger train and a light engine on 15 November 1840 which resulted in six deaths. In addition to this in 1983 a sleeper train derailed on it's approach to Paddington station and resulted in seventy passengers being injured.
