History Of Rotherhithe
Rotherhithe is located in South London and is a riverside area. It offers the feeling of a peninsula. The main focus on the area is the River Thames. The name is associated with the water, from the days the ships were sailing along the Thames. “Hithe” stands for landing place.
The history evolves around St Mary's Church, where the ground was higher and the risk of flooding was reduced. The area was devoted to commerce and industry more than being a residential area. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the area was based on huge areas of docklands. These included the Surrey Commercial Docks. Rotherhithe was originally a shelter for the ships that were waiting to offload their cargo a London Quays. A high volume of grain from Canada and softwood from Scandinavia is believed to have been delivered here.
Rotherhithe was a top place for repairing and breaking down of ships, they also built ships year, mostly at the yards based just off Rotherhithe Street. The Royal Naval yard sub-contracted a lot of the work, which resulted in this being a high demand industry for the area.
Randal and Brent, was a company located at Nelson Dock and they were the top shipbuilding business. They were known for the dismantling of the HMS Temeraire. In the eighteenth century, shipwrights and captains moved to Paradise Row.
Rotherhithe is located in the Borough of Southwark and is set on the south banked of the Thames. It borders Bermondsey.
It remained a working dock until the 1970's. In the 1980's many of the riverside area was redeveloped into housing which resulted in a number of warehouse conversions taking place. In 1999, with the introduction of the Jubilee Line and the London Underground following in 2010, the area experienced rapid growth.
The docks were closed and filled in the 1980's to make way for modern houses. The largest surviving dock is the Greenland Dock. The Town Hall, which ceased in 1905, has been a library, museum and is now the Severn Islands Leisure Centre.
The General Hospital was close to the old Town Hall and was built in the 1870's. It was the infirmary of St Olaves Union in 1875 and renamed the St Olaves Hospital in 1930. It latter became the Guy's Hospital Teaching Group in 1966 but closed in 1985. This building has also been redeveloped into residential properties catering to families and professionals who work in London and want to live on the outskirts of the city centre.
Terriss Theatre opened in 1899, but was bombed during the Second World War which resulted in it being demolished in 1955. Many buildings were demolished during this time including a school and nursery, both of which were redeveloped into residential housing to meet the demand for residential properties throughout the area.
