History Of Shepherds Bush
The name Shepherd's Bush is relatively unknown. Some believe it could be named after a green which was used by shepherds when resting their flocks on the way to London to the markets, others believe it could be named after a shrub.
There is evidence that humans lived in the area in the Iron Age. There is a written record which identifies the area dating back to 704. The area was purchased by the Bishop of London.
Maps dating back to 1841 show an undeveloped area with a lot of farmland. The Catholic Church was built in 1904 named St Stephen. It was a beautiful Gothic style church complete with red brick and stone.
Shepherds Bush didn't escape the bombings from the Second World War and was hit by a flying bomb attack that did destroy numerous buildings. In 1963 the famous band, the Beatles, recorded their first television broadcast at the Lime Grove Studios. They returned in 1964 for another recording.
Miles Syndercombe hired a cottage here in 1657. It stood where the Bush Hotel stands today. He planned on using a primitive machine gun to assassinate Oliver Cromwell. The are remained rural until the eighteenth century when housing started to be built along the main roads. This was followed by terraced houses. By the 1830's semi-detached houses were being built.
Since 1844 stations have been opened and closed with the most used being in 1864 with the Hammersmith and City Railway station. The area was already built up at the time the Central Railways tube was introduced in the 1900's.
Empire Theatre was opened in 1903 followed in 1910 by Lime Grove film studios. This has now been replaced by the BBC who use it for their television studios. Shepherds Bush became run down in the 1930's and the council started to clear the slums and build blocks of flats in the twentieth century, along with a shopping area and car park. The Bush Theatre then opened in 1972 in the upper level of the Bush Hotel.
The character of the area changed dramatically with the introduction of Westfield Shopping Centre in 2008. The area has grown in popularity with graduates.
Today there are twelve thousand one hundred and seventy five people living in Shepherds Bush, based on the census from 2011. They live in five thousand five hundred and fifty two homes throughout the town.
