History Of South Lambeth
South Lambeth can be found in the London Borough of Lambeth. Lambeth is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Lanchei. South Lambeth was recorded in 1241 as Sutiamehethe.
It was a small settlement that resided in the area during the middle ages, mostly located at Lambeth Marsh, which was opposite the Palace of Westminster. Most of the residents worked on the Thames. The current borough shares similar boundaries to that of the ancient manner.
The Archbishop of Canterbury received the manor of Lambeth in 1190 with his residence being Lambeth Palace, located opposite the Palace of Westminster. There wasn’t much development in South Lambeth until the eighteenth century when industrial companies moved in along the river banks. The area was known for boat building, glass making and pottery.
South Lambeth went under great transformation after the Westminster Bridge was opened in 1750. Other bridges followed, namely Vauxhall and Blackfriars, which enabled easy transport in to London. South Lambeth became a top choice for those living and working in London, enabling them to move outside the noise and smell of the central city.
Lambeth continued to grow, yet many of the residents were poor. This resulted in the Parish Workhouse being created in 1726, by 1777 it had two hundred and seventy inmates. The Lambeth poor Law Parish was formed on 18 December 1835, which comprised of St Mary parish.
Royal Doutlton, a pottery company has their factory here until 1956 when they transferred to Staffordshire. The Doulton offices still remain today in a listed building. At this time Lambeth was growing at a rapid rate and trebled in ten years.
In 1851 the Lambeth Ragged School was built which was designed to educate children from the destitute facilities, but with the London and south Western Railway being widened in 1904 the school was made smaller. The school still stands today and houses the Beaconsfield Gallery.
In the mid nineteenth century the railway was introduced, which resulted in a housing boom to the area. Due to the increase in population, St Mary's Church of Lambeth couldn't cope with demand and resulted in four new churches having to be built.
Expansion continued south all the way to Herne Hill, Streatham, Clapham, Brixton and Norwood.
As with many of the areas around the London city centre, the Second World War had an enormous impact on the area which resulted in many of the large properties from the nineteenth century being demolished and replaced with public housing estates. This policy carried on well into the 1970's.
The 2011 census shows three hundred and three thousand and eighty six people live in Lambeth of which fifty percent are female and fifty percent are male. The average age is thirty four years of age with fifty eight percent of the residents having been born in England.
