History Of Stockwell
Stockwell was first recoreded in 1197. Stockwell Green formed the centre of the neighbourhood complete with manor house and public well. The Plough, the Old Queen's Head and The Swan were the earliest public houses in the area.
The manor house was later demolished in 1755 and replaced with a new manison, but this lasted only a century. It was during this time that Stockwell transformed from a nurseries with grand houses to villas. It was William Cox from Kennington that started to develop the area of Stockwell Park in 1838 to create a high class estate. Most of these villas were terraced and packed togeher tightly. It is believed that it is this reason why they are still standing todday.
Stockwell was a very rural manor set on the edge of London. It was filled with market gardens and a botanical garden, which was built in 1880. Stockwell was part of Surrey until the creation of the County of London in 1889.
During the 1860's a number of public institutions came to the area, this included a college and an orphanage. Churches replaced small chapels and Stockwell Green was completely built during the 1870's.
It was this area that was the southern most point of the Londons deep tube line which was rolled out in 1890, but it was after the Second World War when the area started yet another transformation. There were a number of municipal estates created, one of which is Stockwell Gardens, which was set on the site of the Stockwell College and Springfield in Stockwell Park.
Stockwell experienced it's fair share of tragedy, the most notible being on 22 July 2005 when a Brazilian electrician, Charles de Menezes, boarded a train. The police wrongly identified him as the bomber from the previous day who had set bombs off on a bus and three tube stations. They shot him seven times without any warning. In 2008 the jury returned with an open verdict.
In 1986 a serial killer, Kenneth Erskine, known as the Stockwell Strangler, killed seven older victims, three of which were from the area.
Some of the residentis during the nineteenth century included Arthur Beckham, who was a well-known author who moved to the area when he was fifteen.
This area is also brimming with social housing including Stockwell Park, Studley, Mursell, Stockwell Garddens and more. Even so, you can still see much of the magnificent grandeur that once made Stocckwell so appealing to the wealthy men who worked in London and wanted to escape the noise and smells the city offered.
Acccording to the data from the 2011 census there are fourteen thousand, seven hundred and seventy seven inhabitants in Stockwell. Forty eight percent of these are women and thirty two percent are men. The average age in the area is thirty three. What is interesting is that only 32.7% of the people living in the area were born in England.
