History Of Sydenham
Sydenham was originally known as Chipeham in 1206. This is believed to have come from a farmstead which was owned by a man called Cippa. Over the centuries the name evolved.
In 1614 the leaseholder attepted to enclose the area with a fence. The Vicar of Lewisham, Abraham Colfe, took the case to court and won. Later the common was enclosed in 1810 by Parliament.
In 1640 the springs were identified to have medicinal properties. As you can imagine this resulted in crowds of people arriving in Sydenham to drink the healing waters of te springs.
Two settlements evolved in the seventeenth century, one was around Bell Green in Lower Sydenham and th eother in Wells Park. The two settlements were divided by the Croydon Council, which was constructed back in 1801.
Sydenham Station was opened in 1839 with the line running along the filled in canal. This is when the wealthy people of London started to arrive looking to build large familiy homes away from the hustle and bustle of London city centre.
Crystal Palace moved from Hyde Park in 1854 and was rebuitl on Sydenham Hill. This resulted in an extensive village being built. Sydenham was considered the best connected place on the Thames with the improvements to the communication systems. Tens of thousands of visitors arrived in the area, which resulted in a housing boom. Many of the residents worked at the Crystal Palace.
Bell Green saw the large gasworks being constructed and Sydenham soon became one of the most densly built up areas in outer London. The population ehre doubled every ten years up to 1871 and then doubled throughout the nineteenth century, where the number of inhabitants reached a whopping forty thousand.
When Crystal Palace was destroyed by fire in 1936 the area took a serious knock. Some of the grandest homes n the area were replaced with smaller homes to meet the need from communiters with a high volume of municipal estates being built.
Sydenham holds onto it's unique charater with Victorian buildings. The town centre has been experiencing a number of buildings being converted to private flats to meet demand for accommodation away from the city centre, but close enough for commuters to work in London centre and escape to the outskirts when they finish for the day.
Sydenham Hill was oriignally named the Great North Woods, which was a large forest space. It soon became a very fashionable area to live in the nineteenth century. Homes were built here from 1861 with the first home registered as Grange Court.
Sydenham along with most of th eother areas of london was attacked during the Second World War. The amin reason that Sydenham was a target was due to the gas works, which were never damaged. The railway did sustain damage along with anumber of homes in the area being destroyed by flying bombs.
