History Of Vauxhall
When Falkes de Breaute married a wealthy widow, Margeret de Redvers, he got possession of Vauxhall manor. This was in 1233. He built Falkes Hall, which was later named Fox Hall.
Spring Gardens belonged to Jane Vaux, which could possibly be a relative of Falkes. This was in 1615. Spring Gardnes had an impressive eleven acres of ground. In 1680 it was opened as a public pleasure park.
Attractions were added and the park reopened in 1732 and with the help of the Westminster Bridge which was completed in 1750, the park was accessible to those living and working in London. The gardens were a popular place to go with concerts, fireworks, refreshments and more. They were renamed to Vauxhall Gardens in 1785. The gardens were closed in 1859 after suffering financial problems. Vauxhall Park then opened in 1890 across from Spring Gardens.
Vauxhall Station was opened in 1848 by the London and South Western Railway. It has eight platforms. On 23 July 1971 the London Underground Station was opened in the area. Vauxhall sits on the Victoria line.
What many people don't know is that there was a regular milk train that ran from Torrington to Vauxhall due to its location to a top milk bottling plant and creamery, United Dairies. The station would have trains arriving from around the West Country. They would have to shorten the train at Clapham Junction in order to fit in Vauxhall Station.
The Vauxhall riverside was a hive of activity with commerce and industry booming for three centuries. In 1903 saw the Vauxhall Ironworks Company build its very first car. The company relocated in 1905 to Luton and became Vauxhall Motors, which is known today.
The Vauxhall Bridge which was built in the nineteenth century was replaced in May 1906 with the bridge that still stands to this day. Vauxhall went through a major transformation in the 1930's with a number of blocks of flats being built, but the area became run down in the early 1990's.
What is interesting is that MI6, the Secret Intelligence Service, moved to headquarters in Vauxhall Cross in 1993. Luxury apartment blocks have filled the riverside, especially St George Wharf. Cafes and restaurants opened, along with nightclubs and gay bars.
Vauxhall is home to a number of historical buildings that still stand today. One of the notable buildings is the M16 building which has been used in a number of the famous James Bond films. Brunswick House is another of the top historical properties of Vauxhall dating back to 1758. it is a listed Georgian mansion and was home to the Duke of Brunswick. In 2004 the London Architectural Salvage and Supply Company secured the property and were able to restore it. Today it has a restaurant and is a popular events venue.
