History Of Victoria
In the early years, Victoria was part of St George Hanover Square parish. The area was known for the large brewery which sat on Victoria Street, the Stag Brewery. The brewery was small at the beginning of the seventeenth century, but it grew and was purchased by Watney and Co.
Watney and Co started to building housing around the building along with amenities which were for their employees. The brewery continued to grow and they were employing more staff by the nineteenth century. Sadly the brewery was closed in 1959 and later demolished. The reminder of this once heart of the community brewery is the street name, Stag Place, along with a pub named the Stag.
In 1851 the Victoria Station was opened and this resulted in a development boom. The station was built after the railway ended their services to the south of River Thames. The station was to deal with the problem faced by London Brighton and South Coast Railway and the London Chatham and Dover Railway. It was built as two main line railways stations.
Many of the commuters had to rely on the London Bridge terminus to gain access to the City of London, which was not convenient for those travelling from Westminster. In 1842 John Urpeth Rastrick proposed the railway should be extended to also ensure the West End received a service. His proposal was ignored, but with the Crystal Palace being moved to Sydenham Hill from Hyde Park there was a demand as the palace became a top tourist attraction.
The Victoria Palace Theatre was built in 1832. Originally it was Moys Music Hall, but after the station was built, the theatre was demolished. In 1891 Little Ben was built, it is located just outside Victoria Place. It was a twenty foot version of Big Ben and was removed in 1963 only to be put back in place in 1981.
In 1930 saw the arrival of the Apollo Victoria which was a cinema designed in art deco style. When it opened it opened as “New Victoria.” It was closed in 1975. It opened again for a concert by Shirley Bassey and hosted a number of musicals thereafter.
The Victoria Picture Place was built in 1911 and in 1978 it was reopened as a nightclub. Top acts from around the world performed at the nightclub, known as The Venue. This also closed in 1981 to make way for office buildings.
In 1872 Army and Navy was opened selling clothes, groceries and guns. This is now the famous House of Fraser which can be found in the heart of Victoria. In 1922 the store downsized and sold part of the property to the Post Office, later that section was sold to make space for offices as the demand for commercial space continued to rise in the area.
Westminster Cathedral was built in 1903, this replaced a site what was the Tothill Fields Prison.
