History Of West Kensington
There were several fields belonging to Fulham that were used in the late Middle Ages for archery practice. In the seventeenth century this land was sold to build grand homes and buildings.
In 1745 this village had grown and expanded at a rate of knots after 1814. St Mary's Church was built in 1835. By the middle of the nineteenth century, this area had become a large settlement in the manor of Fulham with a choice of homes from multi-storey houses to terraces homes and some quaint cottages. Market gardens were still in some of the fields, growing produce to be sold at the London markets.
In 1814 the North End station was built and this resulted in the build of the West Kensington Estate by two builders from Dorset; John P Flew and William Henry Gibbs. They built it on the land that was owned by James Gunter. The estate included grand Victorian architecture. Gibbs purchased Mornington Lodge for himself and enlarged it.
The two builders then managed to get the railway to name their station West Kensington, which resulted in the built of one thousand two hundred houses, but the development was halted with the financial depression experienced in the late 1880's, this left unoccupied properties. The two didn’t give up and soon managed to draw in the artistic residents, from artists to writers.
The District Railway opened their station in 1874 at the North End, it was an extension from Hammersmith to Earl's Court. The Station was renamed West Kensington in 1877. Midland Railway began running their service in 1878, but this service failed and was closed in 1880. The entrance to the station was rebuilt in 1927. It was designed by Charles Holden.
West Kensington became desirable from the early twentieth century, mansion blocks were built, some were replacing the existing houses that were already standing. Mornington Lodge was demolished and flats were put in its place in the 1920's. The West Cromwell Road in 1942 provided earlies access for those working in London, creating a high demand for the area.
Sadly St Mary's Church was destroyed when hit by a flying bomb during the Second World War. It was replaced in 1961. West Kensington Estate by built by the council in the 1970's.
The area is popular with young professionals. More than half the residents have a degree and are single.
Today West Kensington is a mix of old and new, but the rich history can still be experienced as you walk down the streets and see some of the earlier architecture. There are a number of Grade listed building which ensure the heritage of the area is not forgotten. It is exceptionally popular for those who work in central London, enabling them to commute with ease to and from work while enjoying a home away from the noise of the city of London.
