History Of West Norwood
West Norwood, located in the London Borough of Lambeth, is mostly a residential area. The name originates from the Great North Wood, which is the name used by the wooded area which could be found north of Croydon. Until 1885, the area was known a lower Norwood.
The Lambeth Manor Enclosure Act in 1806 helps with the development of West Norwood. Most of the land was owned by Lord Thurlow or Archbishop of Canterbury. The roads which run today wee laid based on the enclosure of the area. It was more than one mile to the nearest parish church which was in Streatham, which resulted in St Lukes being built, this was completed in 1825. Most of the houses were lavish villas with cottages being found along the High Street and Knights Hill.
In 1837 the South Metropolitan Cemetery was laid out, this was to make room for burials for the overflowing population. The cemetery spanned forty acres and is the first private landscaped cemetery in London. By 2000, the cemetery had one hundred and sixty four thousand burials in forty two thousand plots. It had also completed thirty four thousand cremations. Originally it also included two Gothic chapels. It is home to catacombs and a number of impressive mausoleums.
1856 saw the opening of the railway line which ran from London to the Crystal Palace, the station was located in Lower Norwood. The name has since been changed to West Norwood. This lead to a boom in the housing market with some of the larger homes being demolished to make space for modern homes, which were built up over the following years. The rail station saw the introduction of the electric train in 1911, but in 1969 the original building was demolished and rebuilt shortly after.
While the High Street did hold a group of shops, it never really developed into a top shopping area. Horse drawn trams would transport passengers to the middle of London from St Luke's Church.
Bomb damage and fatalities were experienced in West Norwood during both the First World War and the Second World War. Chatsworth Baptist Church was rebuilt, it took a direct hit.
The Regal, which was an art deco cinema was completed in the 1920's. It was designed by F Edward Jones, he also designed the famous Madame Tussauds. The Regal opened to the public in 1930. It offered two thousand and ten seats. Unfortunately it was closed in 1964. It was then taken over by a bingo club and was opened through to 1976. This building was demolished in 1981. Today it is where you will find the B&Q store.
Council houses were constructed throughout West Norwood after World War II. Interestingly parts of West Norwood are conservation areas, this includes the area surrounding the cemetery.
