History Of Balham
Balham was originally Baelgenham (Domesday Book 1086) and was established in the eighth century. At the time it was mostly woodland and remained insignificant until the 1770's. This is when the first large house was built on Balham Hill. The area was recorded on several maps in the 1600's and was a village which sat in Streatham.
In 1808, St Mary's Church opened and was enlarged in 1824. The church has undergone renovation several times over the years, as the area continued to grow.
Shops started to spout up in the 1820's with more than twenty businesses in operation, due to the increase in growth in the area. Villas were built, many with large garden spaces. Mansbridge House, now called Swan House is just one of these early nineteenth century homes that still stand in Balham today. It is now a school, the Eveline Day School. As with most London areas, the larger homes were replaced later with smaller homes as people looked for accommodation away from London city centre but still within easy travelling distance.
In 1856 the railway arrived, which resulted in more suburban homes being built over the large and lavish villas. It was at this time that St Marys was awarded its own parish.
Balham boarding school was opened in 1905, it later became the secondary school. The tube station was the next big build in the area in 1926, which was designed by Charles Holden.
The existing properties were replaced by numerous residential builds in the twentieth century, some included blocks of flats. The most notable was Du Cane Court, which tool three years to build from 1935 to 1938. With the housing demand high, more blocks of flats followed well into the twenty first century. Du Cane Court is one of the largest blocks of flats in Europe for private occupation with six hundred and seventy six flats. The flats range from studio apartments to four bedroom units.
In 1940 the tube station was damaged by air raids of World War II. Many people went to the station seeking shelter, but sadly one of the bombs made its way through the roof and killed sixty four people.
The Bedford Pub can be dated back to 1876, it was then named the Bedford Hotel. What many people don't know is that in the 1970's and the 1980's, Bedford Hill was notorious for prostitution.
The Balham Secondary School was expanded in 1975, which took over some houses in the process. It was renamed Hydeburn School and later changed to Chestnut Grove Academy.
Balham is also home to the first pedestrian diagonal X-crossing, which was pioneered in Balham in 2005. The idea was later introduced at Oxford Circus in 2009.
Today the area is a thriving residential area, home to hundreds of families and professional couples, the majority of which work in London city centre. It is also home to a host of bars and restaurants.
As you can see boiler doctor 247 has become a integral part of the community and is proud to be Balham's leading plumbing and heating company with boilers as our business and plumbing is our passion call us today and let us restore your home or business.
