History Of Brixton
It is believed the name Brixton came from the Saxon word Brixstane, which means the stone of Brixi. Brixi was a Saxon lord. He is believed to have put a boundary stone in the area which was to mark a meeting place for the court.
What you may not know is that Brixton, the actual village, didn’t exists at all until the end of the eighteenth century. It was woodland and over time it became farms and market gardens, known for their strawberries.
When the new bridges were built over the River Thames the changes started to take place making it accessible for those working in London to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The earliest development was on Brixton Road, then known as Washway. Growth in Brixton really started after the 1806 Manor of Lambeth enclosures and the opening of the Vauxhall Bridge in 1816, which led to terraced homes and villas being build along the main road. Due to the growth in population, St Matthews Church was built in 1824.
The windmill you see in Brixton today was built in 1816. The Surrey House of Correction followed in 1819 and the Brixton Prison followed some time later. The railway arrived in the 1820's, which caused a housing boom, completely changing the area landscape. The majority of the developers at the time were building terraced homes of two or three storeys, they focused on the artisans. With such growth, the demand for shops arose and Brixton soon became a top shopping centre. Bon Marche was the first department store purpose build in the country and opened to the public on Brixton Road in 1877.
Brixton became the home of music halls and theatres in the late nineteenth century. Charlie Chaplin lived here, so did a number of the Eight Lancashire Lads.
The area did sustain substantial damage during the Second World War, which led to a housing crisis. This resulted in privately rented accommodation being on a decline, especially with the rent controls which were put in place after the First World War, which just made matters worse. Some of the privately rented homes were sold to occupiers, while those that reached the end of their lease were left. This resulted in a large number of homes being in disrepair and Council houses started to fill the gap.
Many of the immigrants that came to Britain in the 1940's and 1950's moved to Brixton. It is believed that Brixton was a top destination for the immigrants due to the fact that they were initially housed in temporary lodges nearby and made the area home to them.
On the 17 April 1999 the Brixton bombing took place, which was targeted at the black community. A nail bomb was placed in Electric Avenue at the junction to Brixton Road by David Copeland, a neo-nazi bomber. He was sentenced to concurrent life sentences as a result. He was also responsible for other bombings around the London area.
As you can see boiler doctor 247 has become a integral part of the community and is proud to be Brixton's leading plumbing and heating company with boilers as our business and plumbing is our passion call us today and let us restore your home or business.
