History Of Putney
Putney has a very rich history which starts with the settlements in Neolithic times to what it is today. It's a lovely location next to the famous River Thames and just a hop and skip from central London. It is a commercial and residential hub of activity with a wealth of cultural and leisure activities.
It is believed that there was a ferry at Putney since the Roman times. In 1729 a wooden toll bridge was built by the Kings carpenters. The wooden bridge remained in place until the stone bridge was completed in 1886. The stone bridge was widened to accommodate commuters in 1933. Today it is one of the busiest River Thames crossings, known as Putney Bridge.
Cromwells army was located in Putney for a short period during the Civil War.
In the 1700's Putney was a single residence area. William Pitt the Younger lived and died here. In 1748 he survived a duel against George Tierney. His home and stables took up most of the area.
From 1796 to 1816 a station, part of the shutter telegraph chain, connected the ships in Portsmouth with the Admiralty in London. This was later replaced by a semaphore station which ran from 1822 to 1847, after which newer electric systems were introduced.
In 1889 this ancient parish was part of Surrey. In 1855 it became part of the Metropolitan Board of Worksand, grouped with the Wandsworth District. Once it was removed from Surrey it became part of the County of London. Since 1965 Putney has been part of London Borough of Wandsworth, set in the Greater London area.
The church was built in the Medieval periods and was rebuilt again during the Tudor period. In 1836 it went under another rebuild. The old tower was restored.
In 1684 Thomas Martyn gave land to form a charity school which was to educated twenty boys. The boys were the sons of watermen. Thomas Cromwell, the Earl of Essex, Henry VIII and Edward Gibbon, a well-known author, were all born in Putney.
Putney remained partly woodland in the 1840;s. It was an agricultural village. The College of Civil Engineering moved to the area in 1840.
Putney is part of the UK parliament constituency which was created in 1918. The Putney Division of Wandsworth was abolished around 1983 and the area became known as Putney, which it is called today.
Conservative parties held the seat in Putney until 1964. It was held by the Conservative Secretary of State for National Heritage from 1979 to 1997, it was later gained by Tony Colman from the Labour Party from 1997.
Putney is well-known for its open spaces and leisure activities. It offers residents clean air away from the city centre of London which made it a top residential estate for centuries. Queen Elizabeth was a frequent visitor to Putney from 1579 to 1603. Putney remains a top area for exercising with ample outdoor spaces. It is the perfect location for those who work in central London.
Within and around the area, there is a number of parks and spaces to enjoy including Wandswoth Park, Putney Health, Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common, to name a few.
